CIPR Foundation Award in PR

Do you want to build a successful career in public relations?

The CIPR Foundation Award is a short starter qualification taught at A-level standard. It will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills that you need to get started in public relations – from understanding the role of the PR practitioner to learning the basics of writing for the press and dealing with journalists.

If you're just starting out in the profession, this course will give you the building blocks for a career in PR.

The Foundation Award provides entry to the CIPR's higher level qualifications – the Advanced Certificate and the Diploma in PR. These qualifications will enable you to gain a professional grade of CIPR membership in the future and become a CIPR Accredited Practitioner

The course examines the key terms, techniques and theories of public relations and look at the relationship between PR and marketing, advertising, promotions and publicity.

It will also define the field and scope of public relations and its relationship with marketing, advertising, publicity and propaganda. Broad introductions will be given to the specialist areas of PR and to in-house and consultancy working practices. Concepts such as corporate social responsibility, reputation management and working with publics will be considered.

The course will also examine the role of the professional PR practitioner, focusing on ethical issues, the CIPR code of practice, and continuous professional development. The principles and practice of effective media relations, writing for the media, understanding a news story, use of visual imagery, and working with press and broadcast media will be covered as well.


By the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand the role and scope of public relations
  • Recognise the differences between public relations, marketing, advertising, publicity, public information, spin and propaganda
  • Be familiar with key PR terminology
  • Be aware of the importance of PR ethics and the role of the CIPR Code of Conduct
  • Understand the key principles of effective media relations
  • Know how to write a news release and sell in your story



There is one three-hour examination involving a report, a news release exercise and an essay.  This will be submitted through out online learning site.

The Foundation Award is ideal if you are:

  • A school or college leaver
  • Considering PR as a career
  • Working in PR in a support or administrative role
  • Interested in studying the Advanced Certificate but do not meet the entry criteria

Note: The start date is approximate and depends on the filling of course!

You will qualify for the Foundation Award if you have at least five GCSEs at grade C or above*.

Those whose first language is not English must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the language - spoken and written - to an International Language Testing System (IELTS) band score of 7.0 or above or equivalent.

* If you do not have the necessary GCSEs or GCEs you may still be accepted at the discretion of the CIPR on the basis of your professional experience (not necessarily in public relations). Please email
